What Happens if You Use the Wrong Power Steering Fluid?

Using the wrong power steering fluid can cause serious problems in your vehicle’s hydraulic system. It may lead to fluid leaks, pump failure, or stiff steering—all of which can affect your safety on the road. To protect the handling and responsiveness of your Chevrolet Equinox, it’s crucial to follow the manufacturer’s recommended fluid specifications and maintain the system regularly.

How to Maintain Your Power Steering System

1. Check Fluid Levels Regularly

Low fluid levels can strain the power steering pump and make steering feel heavy or jerky.

2. Inspect the Power Steering Belt

A worn or loose power steering belt can cause squealing noises and reduce steering performance.

3. Flush Old Fluid When Needed

Replacing dirty or degraded fluid helps keep the system clean and prevents internal damage.

4. Watch for Leaks Around Hoses

Fluid puddles or wet spots near fittings may indicate worn hoses or seals that need prompt attention.

5. Use OEM Parts for Repairs

Relying on genuine components ensures compatibility and long-term reliability when fixing power steering or suspension and steering parts.
